Reminded me why I don't shop at the mall. We needed a gift for my new brother-in-law, who I've only met once. We're from out of town, so we thought we could just stop at the mall and buy a quick gift on our way to the birthday dinner. The young man working at the shop (was it Brandon? Christopher?) was every stereotype of poor salesmanship. We were kind and friendly, but he took this as a sign it was okay to really lay on the salesman act. He would not leave us alone. H would not stop stalking us around the floor. He was like a bad cars salesman, pushing every item over $100. I tried to explain, it's not the price point that matters, we're not cheap, but it would be weird with how little I know the recipient to buy them an expensive gift. Also buying a person of the opposite sex who I don't know a $100 massager? HE. WAS. NOT. GETTING. IT. That store is really small and with this guy not getting the hint to lay off, I was getting kind of anxious and panicky. I just wanted to get out of there. So I grabbed a small wooden sand desk knick-knack; seemed like it was in price point and fit the situation. It was about $20ish. kind of a rip off, but I just wanted to get out of there. Sales guy then tells me that I need to buy the sand too. This is the point, where, if I wasn't having an anxiety attack, I should have walked out and just bought the guy a Harkins giftcard or a year's supply of Paradise Bakery cookies, for the same price as a small wood box and a thing of sand. But I'm not thinking straight, because this guy is wigging me out. Then he tries to upsell me on the sand. He insults my plain sand color, by saying I should get colored, or multiple colors. Wait? What? With a woodbox? On a professional's desk? And the the larger size he was trying to pitch had way more sand than would fit in the wood box it was for. Heart racing and palms sweating, I just needed to get out of there. I grabbed the box, grabbed the small thingie of sand. He took us to the checkout. I asked them if they gift wrapped. No. He tried to suggest that I go out of my way to go to Papyrus upstairs and pay to gift wrap. I just need a little of that thin white paper stuff to go in the store's bag. And he was nonchalant about it. I paid $50 for a tiny wood box, a tiny bit of fake sand, you ruin my day, and you can't even gift wrap? When we got in the car I discovered that the the sticker seal on the jar of sand had been pealed and about 1/2 of the jar was missing. I remember Brookstone being a bit classier than this. One of the worst shopping experiences of my life. Easily the worst customer service. Not much selection. How do they stay open?
